Surviving ObamaCare

OUR PERSONAL HEALTH INSURANCE SITUATION – IMPORTANT AS IT MAY PERTAIN TO YOUR HEALTH COVERAGE.

I just got off the phone with our health carrier, Aetna. We have a private plan (not endorsed by an employer) for a family of 6. None of us have any serious medical conditions. We pay $510 a month, PPO rates, $5000 individual deductible and $10,000 family deductible. I just called for the new rates due to Obamacare and rates increased on their lowest cost plan to $929 per month and now the family out of pocket will go to $12,700.

The one bright spot in all this is that they will let us enroll in December of this year at our current rate of $510 per month and that would continue until Dec. 2014. I suggest, if you have been hit with higher rates, that you call your carrier and ask if they can enroll you at 2013 rates….it will likely save you a bundle this coming year.

I have counseled many families and I am all for providing insurance for those that cannot get it due to pre-existing conditions. The capitalistic model of rate for risk just does not apply to those that cannot be served by private companies….the rate is just too high. The government should have just set up a pool for those individuals, require some level of payment, and subsidize the balance. Instead, the American people pay the freight and the entire private enterprise system is thrown into disarray
