Sugarloaf United Methodist Church is Helping With the Jobless Rate in Duluth

Sugarloaf United Methodist Church is Helping With the Jobless Rate in Duluth

On Friday the Labor Department reported that the U.S. unemployment rate was 10.2% last month.  That was more than expected and the highest rate in more than 26 years.  With employers continuing to cut more jobs than forecast, the economy is still struggling to recover from the recession.  State unemployment rates for October will not be released until later this month, but Georgia was at 10.1% in September and is typically higher than the national unemployment rate.  Our community at Sugarloaf UMC has not been spared.  Kerry Lauria told me Sunday that she knows of at least 75 families in our congregation with one or more unemployed breadwinners, and many more are under-employed.  So, what can you do?

I hope you’ll give serious consideration to joining the Sugarloaf CrossLink group on LinkedIn.  Here’s why:

  • If you’re trying to find a job, you can post a notice on the discussion board and refer to your profile/resume so that your church family knows to be on the lookout for you and to pray for God’s providence.
  • If you aren’t looking for a job, the Sugarloaf CrossLink is a good way to connect with our brothers and sisters who are unemployed/under-employed and to support them with our prayers, our friendship and our professional contacts.
  • If you know of a job opening, the Sugarloaf CrossLink is a good place to post it (actually the Sugarloaf CrossLink Job Openings, a subgroup of the main Sugarloaf CrossLink group).

In addition, you can join LinkedIn and the Sugarloaf CrossLink groups for FREE!

Here’s how to join LinkedIn:

  1. Go to www..linkedin.com.  Enter your first name, your last name and your e-mail address and create a password.  Then, click on the “Join Now” button.
  2. At the next screen you must select your country (United States in the default) and enter your postal code.  In addition, you must at least select your industry from a list of about 150, and depending on the employment status you select, you may also be required to enter your company and your title.  Then, click on the “Enter LinkedIn” button.
  3. At the next screen (your home page on LinkedIn), you can begin joining groups, building your profile and adding applications.  In the meantime, LinkedIn will send a message with a link to confirm your e-mail address.  You must confirm your e-mail address before you can send connect with your contacts through LinkedIn.

If you’re looking for a job, there are always at least 100 professional jobs within 50 miles of SUMC posted on LinkedIn, some exclusively on LinkedIn.  Just click on the “Jobs” link at the top of the screen, enter “30097″ as the postal code and click on the “Search” button.  To cast a wider net, click on “The Web” tab to bring up 40,000+ jobs of all kinds within 50 miles of SUMC found through SimplyHired.  You can refine your search, and when you find something of interest, ask your professional connections (particularly those in the Sugarloaf CrossLink group) to help you gain the inside track.

Here’s how to join the Sugarloaf CrossLink group, once you’re a member of LinkedIn:

  1. Click on “Groups” in the panel on the left side of the screen.
  2. On the right side of the screen, click on the “Find a Group” button.
  3. Enter “sugarloaf crosslink” as the keywords and click on the “Search” button.
  4. Click on the second “Join this group” link to join BOTH the main group and the “Job Openings” subgroup.  Click on the first “Join this group” link to join ONLY the main group.
  5. Review the settings on the next screen and click on the “Join Group” or “Join Subgroup” buttons at the bottom of the next screen.

If you need help navigating LinkedIn, Sugarloaf CrossLink or the “Job Openings” subgroup, call me at 770-235-4276 or send me an e-mail at ken.powers@bellsouth.net.

If you know of others who might benefit or contribute in connecting with the SUMC family on LinkedIn, please invite them to join the Sugarloaf CrossLink group.

In the meantime, may God bless us, everyone!

CPA Serving Lawrenceville, Snellville, Lilburn and Beyond Wins Accounting Advocate of the Year Award

As a Body of Believers we are constantly called to do our best and to excel in all that we do. This applies to us as a husband, wife, child, brother, sister, worker, student or friend. To this end we should give back to the community in which we serve. We have long believed that we should give back by offering free speeches and initial consultations to business owners so that we might share in our knowledge and wisdom we have acquired. This allows us to give back to others, who have in turn previously given so much to us. Ten Years ago, we were blessed to have received the Accounting Advocate of the Year Award. We do what we do because of who we serve and it is only by God’s grace and glory that we are able to do anything at all. Below is a letter we received the year of the Award:
