Atlanta/Duluth GA CPA Presents Men Step  Up…Taking Christianity Into the World

I wanted to let you know about something that has been going on for men in Gwinnett County for about 4 years.

One of the things I have been looking for is a place to grow that is relevant to me as a man in the marketplace. I think I’ve finally found it in a forum called Men Step Up.  This is a weekly forum where men have an opportunity to look at real issues, step up to the truth, and personally interact with the Word of God and one another.

A lot gets done in an hour (6:30am – 7:30am on Friday).  They serve coffee & doughnuts, followed by a brief opening that sets up a lie commonly held by most men, and the truth about that lie.  Then, there is 20 minutes of discussion with no more that 4 people at a table.  One of those 4 is a table leader who directs the conversation for the other 3 to be heard.  The most important thing that happens is each man takes the specific verse of the week and meditates on it and then discusses what jumps out to him.  Then the discussion is opened up to the room and a large group wrap-up takes place.  It is amazing what comes out of this simple approach.

Men Step Up has been around for about 10 years with its origins in Alpharetta.  It now has a subscription based on line offering that is available to any man all over the world.  Check out www.menstepup.com

Locally, Men Step Up – Gwinnett meets every Friday at California Dreaming at 6:30am (I-85 & Old Peachtree Rd. Exit 109).

Duluth GA CPA on Fixing Back Taxes and Installment Plans with the IRS

Duluth GA  CPA on Fixing Back Taxes and Installment Plans with the IRS

Tax law for a layman is most difficult to understanding tax law and even harder yet to adequately to adequately interpret and apply it. To that end documentation, sound written and verbal communication are essential to ensuring that all involved in addressing sensitive tax issues are well informed and versed on the many nuances affecting individual tax decisions. Understanding the “ripple effects” of business/tax decisions is essential to successfully resolving back taxes/tax issues for Atlanta taxpayers. Below is a sample of the correspondence that might be sent to assist a taxpayer when considering setting up an Installment Plan with the IRS:

I am mailing to you a copy of the tax lien received along with a power of attorney and Installment Agreement Request. I am resending the Power of Attorney as one you faxed back left off  bottom of second page. I am resending the Installment Agreement Request as it is old and does not reflect 2009 taxes, which we should also list if you do not plan to pay in full.

I suggest that if at all possible that we do your 2009 returns ASAP and that you pay any and all 2009 amounts owed in full and then for us to do an installment agreement on just the 2007 and 2008 tax years.

Atlanta CPA Firm Offers Tax Guidance to Running Your Atlanta Business

Atlanta CPA Firm Offers Tax Guidance to Running Your Atlanta Business

Understanding the nuances and issues affecting business owners is essential to the efficient running of a business. Below is a sample excerpt that I might receive addressing unpaid Atlanta Back Taxes, Setting up an Installment Plan with the IRS, filing of payroll tax reports and their impact on the filing and payment deadlines of corporate income tax returns.

I am killing myself trying to get 2009 finished.  I’m not sure what the deal is with the bookkeeper but I’ve had to make a change.   I finally was able to get my payroll file yesterday only to discover they did not file 941’s for the last 3 quarters of 2009 or GA withholding for the last 2 quarters.  What a mess!  I was up late last night doing those.  Thankfully the bookkeeper had made some payments online and we are overpaid for the year on 941 tax. I am so in over my head right now trying to handle the day-to-day office stuff while catching up the accounting side.

We may need to extend 1120S but I plan to have all to you in time to file before the April 15 deadline for our S Corporation.

Below is my response:

Please be reminded we have two deadlines to contend with. One is the corporate return which is March 15th and is easily extended.

The second is getting on an Installment Plan which I do not suggest we push past the thirty days from the date of the IRS notice being mailed out to you. The concern there is that we do not want to immediately void an Installment Plan if we cannot pay in full the taxes owned on the 2009, as paying your taxes current is a condition of an Installment Plan staying in place.

One of the first things that I believe would be in your best interest is to hire a payroll service to prepare all of your payroll checks, debit your account to pay and to file all of your payroll tax reports. Payroll is perhaps the most administratively burdensome issue addressing America Small Business Owners and assigning this duty to a outside payroll processor who does only this, is a wise and prudent decision. In fact, I have found that even though I am a CPA that a payroll service can process my payroll

Below is a sample letter that might be used to send to a client who is behind on the filing of their income taxes. With all clients it is essential to keep taxpayers informed of their rights, responsibilities, tax payment and filing deadlines. It is even more so important when working with a taxpayer when addressing back taxes so as to avoid and hopefully stave off IRS collection issues, tax problems and unnecessary penalties and interest:

Your 2008 corporate return is complete and will go out in the mail ASAP.

Please use the checklist on the contact page of my web site to pull all of your 2008 personal information together.

Please forward any estimated payments against paid against your 2008 IRS or GA Taxes as the IRS is a pay as you go system and will add penalties and interest for late payment and late filing.

I suggest ASAP after you get 2008 data to me that you get 2009 to me as well.

Atlanta/Duluth GA CPA on Required Documentation to Prepare Corporate and Personal Income Tax Returns

Atlanta/Duluth GA  CPA on Required Documentation to Prepare Corporate and Personal Income Tax Returns

Below is a sample letter that might be used to assist a taxpayer in ensuring that tax returns are properly prepared and substantive data is provided in order to adequately prepare both corporate and personal income tax returns, while keeping one’s tax bill as low as legally possible, while also staying focused on long term and strategic issues:

I am following up on the data you forwarded and had the below critiques. Please go over these ASAP and send back to me the revised data:

-If you are treating and recording the business’s you have listed separately they need to be appropriately listed and recapped. Please review/advise.

-Please confirm if/that you are doing all of your business in the corporate account. Otherwise you risk losing the tax advantages and legal protection of being incorporated.

-As you are using business mileage all others costs relative to the car should be treated as Shareholder Distributions. In the future all of these monies (such as repairs/advalorem/maintenance, gas, insurance) should be paid personally.

-Please take off of your business listings any monies you paid personally as charitable contributions and forward to me a recap of your charitable giving, while providing copies of year end statements from the organization you donated to.

-Please note that tax law will only allow you to deduct a business phone in your home, provided it is a second line.

-Please list the Insurance and Property tax on your home and utilities as Shareholder Distributions and then to pay these monies personally in the future.

-Please note tax law does not allow the deduction for the cost of clothing, unless it is for a uniform that is unsuitable for other use.

-Please confirm if the rent expense you listed was paid to an outside landlord.

-Please be sure for all corporate activity to list both the beginning and ending checkbook balance.

-Please advise if you have any other income, dividends, interest income, W’2’s etc.

-Please be reminded that tax law requires you to pay your taxes as  you go. Please advise of the dates of all estimated tax payments to both the IRS and to GA.

-Please be reminded that the rules of an Offer in Compromise require all taxpayers to be current on both their tax filings and payments. Accordingly it will be imperative to both pay all taxes on your 2009 returns  ASAP and to forward to me what your estimated profit will be from each business for 2010 so that I can advise you accordingly what you should be sure to pay as taxes as you go for 2010.

-I suggest ASAP that you retain a payroll service and to begin processing your W-2 wages and your required withholding. Please be reminded the above OIC (Offer in Compromise) rules will, as well as tax law, require you to pay yourself a fair and reasonable salary given position and profit.

Utilizing a payroll service will do much to make this administratively burdensome process more seamless than if you strive to go it on your own. To learn more visit http://www.hiscpa.com/payroll.html

Atlanta CPA Author & Speaker John Dillard CPA to Present at Duluth First United Methodist Church

Atlanta CPA Author & Speaker John Dillard CPA to Present at Duluth First United Methodist Church

Happy New Year!

The decorations are down – or nearly down, the celebration with family and friends is past and we’re off into 2010.

27:17 is rolling along too.  There are some great events planned for this year!

This month, John Dillard will be joining us and talking about your role as a believer in mission and the Navajo Family Mission Trip in July 2010.

No matter where you are on your spiritual walk, whether a new believer or old, missions and seeking to serve beyond our walls is a mark of an impassioned believer on fire for the Kingdom of God.  Many of us, if not all of us have frequently asked “what can I do on a mission trip, what do I have to offer, or what can I say to encourage others?”

When Jesus looks about for those to serve, He does not call the equipped but rather He chooses to equip the called.  In this way, God can gain all of the glory for it is only when we humble ourselves that God can truly be exalted.

Food?  A signature of 27:17 events is food.  We’re having shrimp, french fries, a salad and dessert.  It will be a good meal.

Let us know you’re coming and try something new for the New Year – bring a friend!

27:17 is a monthly Men’s Gathering and Dinner open to men of all ages.  27:17 is based on Proverbs 27:17 “Iron Sharpens Iron as One Man Sharpens Another”.  It’s purpose is to bring men together from all walks of life so that they may sharpen each other against the difficulties and temptations in the world.

If you have questions or comments, you can call Bob Balkcom @ 770-241-0146, Carey Odum @ 770-476-4539 or email us at proverbs.2717@yahoo.com.  Hope to see you on Thursday, January 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Duluth UMC “Fish Tank”!

Duluth First UMC is located at 3208 Duluth Hwy (Hwy 120), Duluth, GA 30096 US

Yours in Christ,
27:17

Duluth CPA Illustrates Directory of Tax Issues Facing Atlanta Taxpayers When Preparing for Their Year-End 2009 Taxes

Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail. We focus on what we can do to interpret the future solely than rather how best to interpret the past. The below will give you a sampling of what you can personally do to get your business ready for you yearend 2009 tax bill:

Based upon your advice that your business will net approximately $100,000 more than last year, you will want to make sure you pay by year end $30,000 to the IRS and $6,000 to GA.

I am mailing to you Estimated Tax Payment Forms for you to use to pay any shortfall.

Though these are dated to be paid 1-15-10, please be sure to pay them by 12-31-09.

Please note the estimated tax payment forms I am sending you are blank. To fill in the amount and pay please use the above tax amounts that will be owed for the year less the respective withholding. Please be reminded that tax law requires you to pay a fair and reasonable salary given position and profit.

Please be reminded that you can fund a SEP/IRA up to 25% of your gross wages. To the extent you opt to fund a SEP/IRA then you can reduce the year end estimated payments by 28% to the IRS and 6% to Georgia

To help illustrate, I have provided the example below:

If your year to date federal withholding is $18,000 and you decide to fund your SEP/IRA by year end by the amount of $20,000 then you will reduce your year-end estimate by $2800.

Original Tax Estimate to IRS without SEP/IRA                       $ 30,000

Less year to date federal withholding                                            18,000

Less tax savings of funding SEP/IRA                                              5,600

Net amount to be paid IRS by year end                                      $ 6,400
