Set Apart for the Gospel of God

Set Apart for the Gospel of God

Ordained by our birth, confirmed by our faith we are set apart to do great things in God’s name. Though we should well look to our leaders for insight and guidance, there is much in life we can accomplish and those who we only can  reach through our specific life circumstances. Often we look to the minister at our church to do much of the work as they are ordained and well trained in “religious matters,” the Bible is full of examples of those who were specifically designed and destined for a unique task for their lives. If we are open to God’s prompting there will be much for us to do and accomplish in God’s name. However, if we fail to pick up the torch and carry God to the furthest ends of the earth there will be many who do not hear and volumes of tasks will lie undone. However if we are open to God’s prompting, we can accomplish much in the name and admonition of the Lord.

We are Set Apart for to do wonderful and marvelous things Exodus 3:20. We are destined to be examples by are speech and in our actions Romans 3:21. We are ordained to be His Matthew 21:16. We are set apart to live in faith Matthew 17:20 . God came to save the world and to love us throughout all time. God came to call his people to himself to lead us to live a life of light by telling others the good news of Jesus Christ. By setting himself as a sacrifice offering for all, we indeed all are called by his example to do great things in his name. Being set apart to show great fruits  in our lives, living out before others the majesty of His glory and our very own divine purpose. Left to our own devices we are doomed to fail, but with faith as even as small as a mustard seed, we are able to live in his grace while being set apart for great things. As we all begin the new year let us all reflect and be open to the burdening of the Holy Spirit to be his hands and feet.

Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.”

Merry Christmas to All

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Merry Christmas to All

All over the world and throughout the house,

Everyone was happy including my spouse.

Kids presents and our friends had been picked and procured,

To make sure that indeed the best deals had indeed been scored.

Though our economy, for sure, has been tight.

Let us not forget the reason and often our plight.

God redeemed us for reasons that are firm and sure.

As He loves and knows us for reasons that are pure.

As we enter this season of bliss, let us not forget the less fortunate on our list.

Though times have been tough, God will come through,

Just as he has always been true and true.

As we hang with our peeps and all of our friends,

Let us not forget the true reason, even through to the end.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

God bless you all, as you are all unique in his sight.

Search for Him in all of your ways,

And he will find and support you, even though life sways.

I pray peace for your family and all of the rest,

As he will bless you and give you all of His best,

Seek Him with your strength and all of your heart,

And he will be there, as He has been from the start.

——————————————————————————————————————-

I pray that God bless each and every one of you this season and great blessing on you and yours in 2009.

Crime Victim Restitutions Act of 2005

Crime Victim Restitutions Act of 2005
John Dillard, CPA Works to Improve Rights of Young Crime Victims
In December of 2004, I had occasion to meet with someone who worked in the District Attorney’s Office in California. She informed me that California had a law on the books for about seven years that required the perpetrators of serious crimes against children, such as molestation, to pay for the victim’s medical and counseling care. By the end of the week of that meeting God asked me to take this issue to the state of Georgia as our state, at that time, had nothing to protect our Georgia children. God crystallized what I was supposed to do and in a desire to be obedient I set about to accomplish what He had asked me to do, “to make this a Georgia law.”

Within a week of God telling me to march, I was able to obtain a meeting with GA Senator Renee Unterman, a woman who like myself had a heart for those who could not protect themselves. Within sixty days the proposed law and I were in front of the most influential committee in either GA House, the Senate Judiciary Committee who quickly unanimously agreed to its passage. From there the bill went to the Senate Floor where it also passed 47-1. Our next stop was the GA House where unfortunately the law got stuck. I guess God did not want the law passed in 2004. During this time and since I continually contacted and lobbied the Governor Purdue’s Office and I thought that those contacts were falling on deaf ears. Boy was I soon to be surprised.
To begin the 2005 Legislative Session, Governor Purdue sponsored the Crime Victim Restitutions Act of 2005, which set up a procedure for notification, and reimbursement of the victim’s medical and counseling expenses. 86% of the Georgia legislature voted in favor of the bill and then the Governor signed it on April 11 and it will become law on July 1, 2005.

I do not feel that I accomplished any of this but I do know that I was obedient to God and to His leading and to what God would have me do. No matter what it is, listen to that still small voice the Lion of Judah, the Alpha and the Omega speaking to you and to your heart. Make time for Him each and every day of your lives. Put on the armor of God and meet the world head on keeping in mind and focusing on eternal things. Dare to dream, dare to move, and know that He alone is God. Together we can all make a difference in this world. Dare to attempt something so great for God that it is doomed to failure lest He be in it!

I am now exploring whether God wants me to try to get this law passed at the federal level. I would appreciate any insight or help which you might provide. I believe in a God can and will do all that he sets out to and I pray that he uses me deeply in his work.

In Christ,

We are All Ordained Lay Ministers

We are All Ordained Lay Ministers

Nehemiah, a layman, lived approximately 500 B.C. and served as a cupbearer to a Babylon king as the conquered people of Israel lived there in captivity.  By studying Nehemiah’s story as it is told in the Old Testament, we are able to learn and to first-hand see that we all can accomplish great things in God’s name. Originally believing the God of the Old Testament to be harsh and judgmental, I have discovered that throughout time, that God loves his people offering grace, teaching faith, and an unyielding love. In captivity, Nehemiah was brought face-to-face with his destiny and chose to accept the task God laid out before him and for his life. In his zeal to do God’s bidding, Nehemiah stepped out in faith, to rebuild Jerusalem’s fallen city walls to protect and re-unite the people of Israel. Nehemiah could have ignored the call and not made himself available to do God’s will, but instead chose to answer his defining call to action accomplishing great things in God’s name. Nehemiah re-built the fallen city walls in just fifty-five days while overcoming all obstacles, which were set out before him. Nehemiah did not wait on his pastor or minister for confirmation as he has, as we do, a direct line to the creator of the universe. Choosing to be a servant leader, Nehemiah rose from the ranks thereby becoming a lay minister and leader.

In our frailty and left to our own devices we often will stray from the Word choosing a path, which is not ordained by our heavenly creator. By leaning solely on the Bible as God’s infallible word, we have a standard and benchmark in which to live by. In frequently going back to His word we are able to more aptly see his hand in our lives and the miracles, which occur along our way. Some years ago I began a journal to keep a written account of events in my life, the fears and troubles I face, and the many and frequent prayer requests. By doing so I was more able to look back and begin to see God’s hand more clearly than ever before. My journal covers all aspects of my life including my wife, children, work and my walk with God detailing all aspects of the highs as well as the lows. In taking time to detail my concerns, toils, and tribulations I am better able to begin to look back on these events with more clarity than ever before, allowing me to see answered prayers more clearly. We are exhorted by Jesus to ask anything knowing that if it is in accordance with God’s will that he will answer us. Though many of my prayers are not answered the way I would have preferred but with the added advantage of looking back, I am able to gain a better and unique perspective helping me to be able to illuminate God’s guiding and diving hand. Being able to see the past, present, and future God knows what is best for me and my life. Just as diamond is polished to perfection so are we refined to be more like him.

By taking Christ along with us to work we are able to be a beacon of light to an unsaved world teaching others the good news of Jesus. Be living out our faith both in word and in action with our fellow workers and clients, we are able to let our others see God in us as we seek to conform to the words of our Father, and not those of the world.

By living our life in accordance with His precepts we come closer and face to face with who he truly made us be. Our God is one of order and not happenstance. By staying keenly aware we are able to fulfill our God ordained appointments keeping those meetings he has for us along the way as we journey though life. There are those about us every day, our office associates, vendors and our customers, who are in need of our hearts, experiences, and helping hand to comfort those with whom we daily interact. Just as Nehemiah in the Old Testament was able to look after those about him, we also are called to help those about us who are in need and hurting. In our service to others we learn more about God’s love and grace growing even deeper in our own faith walk.

Leaning not on our own understanding but seeking after God’s wisdom we are more aptly able to accomplish great things in His name. By bringing God into our office lives, our love of others is able to permeate through us sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. I have learned by being bold in my faith makes it easier to be who God has always made and intendeds for me to be. Seeking after him daily, I find a father who loves me unconditionally while always seeking the best for me in my life. It was not until my daughter was born I was able to begin to get a grasp of how great his love is for his people. Though God will never violate the free will he has given us, he stands at the door of our heart gently knocking, calling out our name.

Just as a runner trains to run the race set out before him so should we train our soul and spirit. By putting on the very armor of God we will find super natural strength lifting us in our direst time of need. I have learned to lean on God during those trials seeking after him with all my might. It was on a family mission trip to Jamaica, to reach out to those less fortunate, that God revealed himself clearly bringing his promises for me and my life to the forefront. It was in the midst of this time my family came to claim Psalm 27 as our life verse to guide us along life’s way. My beautiful bride was gracious and for Christmas that year framed in calligraphy Psalm 27:1-9 where it is proudly displayed in our home. Reading these words reminds me of a creator who is aware of my fears, strengthens my spirit, making me more steadfast in his ways. Read these verses slowly over and over letting each divinely ordained word permeate your very being teaching you of his majesty, love, and commitment to all of his people.

“The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?   When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek:  that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,  to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.  Hear my voice when I call, O LORD;  be merciful to me and answer me.  My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger;  you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior.” Psalm 27:1-9

Seek after God with all your heart. Seek his ways allowing him to guide your very steps along your journey. You heavenly father desires the very best for you and your life. Right now, today, God is drawing you ever closer to Him and his kingdom. Wherever you are, whatever is going on in your life, God cares. Call out to him and the Lion of Judah, the Great I Am will hear you. By beckoning to the great helper, the Holy Spirit, we are able to tap into the strength of the Lord, one which surpasses all understanding. And in so doing you will unleash the power of the Holy Spirit to do great things in His name and becoming a great lay minister and servant leader.

Taking Christ To Work…Writing Your Corporate Mission Statement…WWJD

Taking Christ To Work…Writing Your Corporate Mission Statement…WWJD

If you are just starting your business or have been it at several years, it is always wise to align yourself with your core values. Left to our own devices we are apt to stray away from our watchword failing to be all that God made us to be. Though many will tell us that as Christians we are to be a light to the world when convenient, I do not believe the Bible allows itself to be translated beyond what its original words truly meant. As such, if we listen quietly and lean into the Word, we will find all of the insight that we need to both right our business mission statement and to guide our working principles by:

Tell the Truth no Matter What

Often in the sales world as well as the process of fulfilling customer request there is the temptation to embellish a bit about what you can do, how fast or how much better you are than your competition. In doing so, you have opened yourself to telling a white lie (a fib with seemingly good intentions) and in so doing set your client up for disappointment. In making commitments to others in both our personal lives and in the business world we should be sure to make only those that are attainable. We should not promise what cannot be achieved, we should not participate in what cannot be legally and morally defended and we should seek to be a conduit of truth no matter what the consequence. In making commitments to clients it is wise to under-commit and to over-perform. For example, if I believe a project will take me three days to complete then I will advise that it will be completed in no longer than  a week. In this way I have set up an expectation that the client is happy with and will be happier yet still, when I exceed the original deadline.

“Simply let your ‘Yes‘ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” Matthew 5:37

Be Bold in Your Faith: Tell the Great Story

The Apostle Paul and indeed the whole of the Bible exhorts us to be bold in only one thing: Our Faith. Accordingly we should take care to ensure that we are the salt and light of the earth living by deed and spoken word living out our faith in front of our clients. By being involved in the community, our clients lives and by sharing with all overtly our faith we are able to be lay ministers to all whom our lives intersect. We are to be a witness of the good news of Jesus Christ to all we work with and serve. Not some but all. Some have interpreted the Great Commission (Jesus last words before he ascended into the heavens) loosely but in his speaking I see no ambiguity in his desire. Accordingly

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Others First

God came to serve the world and not to lord over it. The one person who could have ruled the entire planet at the blinking of an eye, instead chose to limit himself so that we might be able to better relate and understand his desires for our heart. Jesus walked the world among us talking to us and putting others first above his own needs. Our business’ are allowed to thrive because he desires it and as such we should constantly put at the forefront the needs and desires of our customer. Though we all are entitled to make a fair wage and salary we must always strive to communicate as much as possible, not so much as to manage expectations, but to serve by keeping those we serve informed about progress on their account. Though every business will be different, I personally believe that fees for services or products should be mid-range (i.e., about half of your competitors charging more for their products and about half charging less), while striving to keep the quality of services and products at a level, which is second to none. In this way clients will be able to afford and obtain top quality products at a fair and competitive price.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Practice Excellence

If you do anything regardless of what it is, from the most menial of task, answering the phone, fulfilling a customer request to the most complicated do everything as if doing it for God himself. It is useful when completing any task to step away from it and strive to take an independent look, striving to “see both the forest at the trees at the same time.” In this way you will be better armed to correct any mistakes, inconsistencies or problems before they occur. Although when human emotions and their feelings are involved this process can become much more difficult, we will be better served if we are always able to act and speak in love. Our work product tells others volumes about our belief standards and the mantra under which we serve. Accordingly not only our first impression is the most important but also is every one after that as well equally important.

“But just as you excel in everything…” 2 Corinthians 8:7

What Does Being a Christian CPA Mean…Taking Christianity Into the Workplace

What Does Being a Christian CPA Mean…Taking Christianity Into the Workplace

As a Body of Believers are often faced with trying to figure out how the world and all that it stands for intersects with our beliefs. Frequently it appears as if the truth has gotten muddied and caused our view of right and wrong to be grayed. It is in these times I strive to step back and to see the world as Jesus did and not through that solely of my own eyes. Office politics are frequently the bane of many as the “company line” often seems to itself diverge from the truth and actions in no way align with the truth. No, these times are not easy but I have found that by concentrating on some of the Bible’s truths during my workday that it is indeed easier to do it “His Way” than my way. Living in a fallen world is not easy but Jesus promises that if we follow Him that our yolk will be light. Taking these Biblical truths as part of your mantra will do much to help you stay focused on the light of the Gospel and not the noise of this world.

Live in the Truth

We are constantly bombarded with media from television, radio, print, and the Internet with those who seek to tell us that seeking our own interests is the best way or that the Bible is not applicable to our lives today. We are often tempted to believe that much of what Biblical scholars have written is situational or cultural. This leads us to falsely thinking that the Word is solely indigenous to the times in which it was written, and in so doing lead ourselves and others further away from what is intended. Therefore I have determined for myself that I will always accept the Bible as the truth knowing, believing, and relying on its timeless precepts. By predicating the entirety of our lives solely on God’s word, we cannot be led astray.

“Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.” Isaiah 50:7

Live in the Present

Often well before we have forgiven ourselves God has set us free from our sin based solely on our repenting and turning from our transgressions. God will set our past as far as the east is from the west choosing to remember them no more. Similarly are we to not live in fear, by being unduly concerned about the future. For in truth there is nothing we can do to control the actions of others and events in our lives and frequently little if any influence we can exert on what the final outcome of events will be. Accordingly, in both our work and personal life, we are not to be obsessed and unwisely tilted toward future events. Unequivocally we are to be wise stewards of what we have been given and to plan for the future, but we are not to live in constant stress about the myriad of possibilities and therefore fearful of future events. Though we are to live expectantly and in hope for tomorrow we should live in the present being careful to enjoy the blessings and joys of everyday living.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Be Like-Minded

In the workplace there will be many environments that will be beyond your control. However, there will be many that you can change by yourself and often the best way you and influence these is to “vote with your feet.” As Believers we are encouraged in the New Testament to flee from immorality. I have learned over the years that the best way to avoid trouble is to steer clear from it and to be around those who not only believe as you do, what also live as you do. Seeking God’s will for you and your life is critical to how you interact with those closest to you. However, statistics have shown that we will all spend a large majority of our lives at work. Seeking out an employer and environment where you can survive and thrive is an admonition that we all should take to task. I know that I am unable to avoid temptation if I have to live in it and be around it incessantly. However if I am able to seek out fellow Christians and think about the truths of God will I have the best chance of success. Writing God’s name on my heart, my mind, my work world and the whole of my life enables me to keep his precepts at the forefront of my mind.

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.  But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2

Living in Confidence

In Romans 8:31 we are encouraged by the Apostle Paul’s words “if God is for us, then who can be against us?” Knowing that right will ultimately prevail enables me to get through the toughest of situations with my dignity and faith intact. Finding a verse or two that I can constantly bring to mind will help me be reminded that as Christians, we are over-comers. In fact, we have already won; God guarantees it. He will never leave our side even in our darkest hours and will walk along side, in front of us, and uplifting us through all of life’s toughest trials. During these tough economic times our ability to provide for our family and the very livelihood of our business will be tested, and we need the power and strength of the Holy Spirit to stand tall in the face of adversity.

“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?  The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom

shall I be afraid?  When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me,

they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me,
even then will I be confident.” Psalm 27:1-3

Being Still

There is perhaps no greater charge or larger challenge for the Believer than to be still in the face of adversity. For whether you own your own business or work for someone else, you will find yourself in situations which are not fair, where you have been falsely accused, or threatened. These threats may be real or veiled, emotional for physical, financial or impugn your very integrity. I have often found myself when attacked trying, in my own power, to find a way out, to explain what happened or to fix the situation myself. Frequently in so doing I have made a bad decision much worse than would have occurred if I had relied upon the Holy Spirit for guidance. As I have grown spiritually I have learned that my way is not the best way and that I do indeed serve a sovereign God. My God is large and in charge and will do as He pleases being sure that God will handle situations the way he desires. I have learned to take my problems to God acknowledging there is a big obstacle ahead and then to say in reverence, “you [God] have a big problem, what are you going to do about it, and do you need me?” Often all God wants us to do is to be still and to wait on his hand and divine guidance. When Israelites were backed up against the Red Sea with the might of the Egyptian army, they were very afraid as their very lives were at risk. and it was at this time God spoke mightily to them.

“Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.’” Exodus 14:13-14

I know that this world is not easy, but I am encouraged that God tells us that we do not belong to it; that we belong to him. As I live my day in the working world and in my business I strive to keep at the forefront of my mind these Biblical truths which both strengthen me and give me hope to overcome all that challenges me. I know if I can stay true to the course God has set out for me and my life that indeed He will live through and with me. Go therefore into the workplace and be encouraged in the good news of Jesus Christ.

About Us

The Norcross Fellowship Luncheon (NFL) is a weekly luncheon that meets at 12:00 every Wednesday at the Golden Corral in Duluth, GA. The NFL’s mission is to provide a platform for Christian businessmen to share their story of how God has touched their lives both personally and professionally.

The NFL has met every week since being started in September, 1985 by Larry Shrader and Heinz Wegener, and have had hundreds of businessmen share their testimonies. The NFL is not affiliated with any denomination or organization, has no membership, and has never taken an offering to support the meetings. Men and women from all denominations and those with no church affiliations attend. The meetings are geared to businessmen sharing their faith in Jesus Christ and how that works in the marketplace.

NFL Goals:

  1. Provide a platform for Christian businessmen to share their story of how God has touched their lives.
  2. Create an environment where anyone will feel comfortable and will receive encouragement and help in their search to find purpose in life.
  3. Highlight other activities and organizations that can provide Christian training and discipleship.
