How Do I Find a Good CPA for My Gwinnett/Atlanta Business?

Is Your CPA Technically Proficient?

How Do I Find a Good CPA for My Gwinnett/Atlanta Business?

Our world has become one of intense specialization as you have had to hone and perfect your craft and you will want to find a business CPA whose dedication and ambition matches that of your own.  To that end, recapped below you will find several issues to contemplate as you make one of the most important decisions that will impact your business success and your family’s financial future:

  • Work a CPA who has at least ten years of varied experience.  CPA’s, like doctors, have extensive training requirements that are important and a prerequisite to even obtaining one’s CPA license.  Just as you would not necessarily prefer to be an oncologist’s first patient, so will you want to find a well skilled and trained CPA.  One of the first places to look would be to ask to see a potential accountant’s resume.
  • Work with a CPA who graduated at the head of their class.  Accordingly when you are going to soon have a major surgery would you prefer to have a physician from a top school whose honors are most likely the best indicator of future success or would you prefer to find someone who failed to excel and graduated at the tail end of their class?
  • Work with a CPA whose goal is more than just tax returns.  As a business owner, you will want to find someone who has a heavy emphasis on tax planning, a wise and judicious planning style, retirement planning, as well as a broad based understanding of all types of medical, liability, property and other specialty lines of insurance.  Often a well-placed word of advice is all a good listener and seeker needs to hear.
  • Work with a CPA who cares more about the world than his business.  Although attentiveness to your needs and responsiveness to you are critical to your success, our work lives are not how we are all going to be remembered.  Is your CPA regularly involved in giving back to the community, do they have an active local or overseas ministry that they actually participate in and support?  Do they help the elderly or oppressed in the community, are they involved in the local PTA are they centrally involved in striving to make this world a better place for us all?

Work with a CPA and make the best decision for your business. Seek the counsel of others as you seek a CPA, you make one not only for yourself but those who are depending on you as well.  These people include not only your family but also the family of your employees as your business and your own financial success depend on it.

Evaluating a client’s prior personal income tax return a CPA can gain much guidance and information about a particular taxpayer. However there is no substitute for a CPA being keenly aware of all information that they receive from a client. The below is a sample letter that we might send to a client to ensure that all of the information for their personal income tax return is received to ensure that a timely and correct return is prepared thereby ensuring that only the lowest legal possible tax is paid:

In preparing your 2010 personal income tax return I noted that you:

Listed 8,000 of business miles and $2,000 of Unreimbursed Employee Expenses. Please confirm that these were not included in the corporate expenses as listed on the corporate return. If they have not yet been reimbursed I suggest you turn in an expense report to gain reimbursement, if you believe this an economically viable option, as this will gain you full reimbursement for the monies, rather than a tax deduction. Please be reminded that tax law requires you to keep by a day log to support your business miles, in the event of an audit or that the IRS requests.

It appears as if you received a premature distribution from an IRA, please get to me a copy of the Form 1099-R.

Please get to me a recap by category/type of your revenue and expenses for all of your rental properties. For any new properties purchased during the year, please be sure to forward a copy of the two page settlement statement where it was purchased so that I might properly record the depreciation on the properties.

Do not yet have the real estate taxes or mortgage interest on your personal residence.

Determining the Net Worth of Your Gwinnett/Atlanta Business

Knowing How to Evaluate the Market and Your Business Risks Will Do Much to Ensure You Receive Maximum Value When you Sale Your Business.

Determining the future net worth of your business, a determined and insightful understanding of your Profit & Loss statement (P&L) is essential and critical. Though a balance sheet is a recap of what has happened to a business’s assets and liabilities to date, a P & L, if properly presented/managed/understood is a look into the company’s short as well as its long term viability. A businesses P & L essentially measures how well the business is utilizing company assets, personnel procedures and facilities in its effectiveness of serving customers while keeping a keen eye on profit maximization. By properly gathering and studying one’s operations and its corresponding P & L, one can learn much about a business which is useful for measuring rates of return, detecting both positive and negative trends, taking corrective action, and business valuation.

With  all ratios, care and attention should be given to evaluate them in light of company size, maturity, business climate and industry. Though there are many general rules of thumbs for a variety of different industries, there is no substitution for wise and judicious counsel of a wise and trusted business adviser/CPA. They will help evaluate these and many other nuances which make your particular circumstances, operating overhead and unique niche.

By evaluating a client’s prior financial statement a CPA can gain much guidance and information about a particular taxpayer. However there is no substitute for a CPA being keenly aware of all information that they receive from a client. QuickBooks is an excellent startup Accounting Package for many clients and may serve the business well into the future. The below is a sample letter that we might send to a client to ensure that all of the financial information is received to ensure that a timely and correct return is prepared thereby ensuring that only the lowest legal possible tax is paid and that financial results are both timely and accurately compiled.

I researched this last night and came to the conclusion that the checks that need to be voided in QuickBooks are for June to August. In voiding the checks to make our operating account come to a zero balance this is going to effect the June to August financials. Even if I change the date on the check to void them in August it will still effect the other months.

The below is my response:

If you make a journal entry to exactly offset the voiding in the prior months for those months it will offset and net to zero the net effect of the voiding.

Then you can do in August a journal entry for the total of the voiding, so that the net effect of the changes in QuickBooks effect only the current period.

To complete your 2010 Corporate Return for please forward:

Copies of the W-2’s and W-3 for 2010.

Finding Total Freedom in Christ

Praising the Greatness of Our King

We pray that each of you are truly denying yourselves and carrying your cross this week. We pray that you are rejoicing in the freedom you have in Christ but not taking advantage of it.  We pray that you are growing in His grace and love and being renewed in knowledge in the image of your Creator! We serve a Mighty God! Stop and think for a minute that the God who created the entire universe and uses the earth as His footstool, loves you enough to be intimately involved in your life and orchestrates every detail! Incredible! This week at 7 Bridges we are rejoicing in the Greatness of our King and praise Him for all He has done! We have a full house here at the Garden and are seeing lives being transformed daily. Please continue to pray for us and each person that comes through this ministry. Thank you for your prayers and for those of you that are sowing into this ministry, either with your time and service  or your donations. You are needed and we cannot do it without you. Have a blessed week and remember that you are highly favored by the Lord!   ** FYI- We are planning on having another concert on October 30th at 7pm so mark your calendars now so you can plan to come!

GO JESUS GO JESUS GO!  LOVE,  PASTOR 7

Pastor 7 with 7 Bridges to Recovery is doing great things to Feed the Homeless of Atlanta while spreading the word of God. I suggest you go down and see what he is doing on the weekends to take the message to the streets of Atlanta. I believe he would be a great speaker to the whole congregation and Discipleship Groups as people are looking for opportunities to get real with their faith by being the very Hands and Feet of Jesus Christ. You can read about his Ministry at http://www.7bridgestorecovery.org/home_page.html   We are actively involved in going and supporting Pastor 7 and the great work he is doing to Serve the Lost, the Last & the Least. If a video is worth a thousand words these will indeed be priceless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsEGkj30R5Y&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0j3NgC8fXw

Be Sure You Rely Upon a Professional CPA to Prepare Your Corporate Income Taxes

Be Sure You Rely Upon a Professional CPA to Prepare Your Corporate Income Taxes

Tax law treats partnerships/LLC’s/LLP’s and partnerships as disregarded entities. In layman’s terms this means that the entities income flows down through the entities owners and each individual shareholder/partner is then responsible for the payment of respective taxes. Thus, it becomes imperative to not only consider the overall taxable income of the entity to which you belong but also the taxes which will be due on the tax items flowing down to the individual owners.

As each owner’s situation varies dramatically, great care should be afforded in closely held business to ensure that taxes have been appropriately considered for all. When there is more than one partner, it may be wise to consider assisting in making shareholder/member distributions at the highest partners marginal tax rate to ensure that everyone gets at least enough to cover their respective tax obligation. Each of these entities will issue a K-1 to each individual shareholder to reflect their corresponding share of entity profits.

Although S Corporations have to issue K-1’s and make distributions based upon stock ownership percentages, partnerships, LLC’s, and LLP’s are allowed by law to issue K-1’s and member distributions based on any method that all owners agree upon. This is a distinct advantage partnerships, LLC’s and LLP’s have as agreeing members have the ability to do what they will with the profits whereas S corporations are required to issue distributions and K-1’s based upon each shareholder’s ownership percentage.

Critiquing a client’s prior tax return a CPA can gain much guidance and information about a particular taxpayer. However there is no substitute for a CPA being keenly aware of all information that they receive from a client. The below is a sample letter that we might send to a client to ensure that all of the information is received to ensure that a timely and correct return is prepared thereby ensuring that only the lowest legal possible tax is paid:

For your corporate return I need ASAP:

To get a copy of where the IRS accepted your S election.

To know if you have filed the applications I forwarded on October 15th for you to sign and return to me so I can file to get your company a State/GA Withholding number and to register your company with the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Please forward to me the 2010 beginning and ending cash balance per your checkbook.

Please advise if you have retained a payroll service for your 2011 payroll tax needs.

Please advise as to what the $1000 Miscellaneous Items is so that I might list it properly on the tax return.

Atlanta CPA on Top 10 Characteristics of a Christian CPA Firm

If you call yourself a Christian CPA Firm, your words actions and deeds need to align with the way you run/manage your business. These Top Ten Verses/Characteristics will do much to help you ensure you are walking the walk and talking the talk. Though many will do what they can to derail your good efforts as Satan will always rise up against those who are doing good. So count it a blessing for when you are prosecuted for you are doing much good for the Kingdom of God.

Top 10 Characteristics of a Christian Firm

  1. Matthew 7:12 The “Golden Rule” are not just words to us. Our primary focus is you, being sure to tailor our firms services to your needs. God calls on us emulate Himself in all matters and to ensure that both our hearts and actions are consistently aligned in love.
  2. 2 Corinthians 8:7 Fast efficient turnaround in your work/returns. Most work is completed within 48 to 72 hours = Good Returns Fast. The Apostle Paul encourages us a Believers to “excel in everything.”
  3. Genesis 6:22 We know that by focusing on the details that the big picture becomes clearer, just as Noah did everything that God commanded and not one issue was left astray.
  4. 1 Chronicles 21:1-3 You do not have an account number at our firm. We believe our clients are much more than just customers. My goal for all of my clients is that they become lifetime friends. Satan tried to tempt King David to take a census and to gain pride from his own accomplishment rather than focusing on the Glory of God.
  5. Numbers 13 We are able to see the forest and the trees simultaneously helping to ensure that your short term decisions do not become long term problems. When a member from each tribe of Israel was sent out to scout the Promised Land, only two were able to see the truth in totality and that God’s covenant was true and that the Land of Milk & Honey would soon be theirs.
  6. John 14:1-3 We can serve as a part-time Virtual CFO providing technical guidance and wisdom to issues you did not even know you have. Just as Jesus went ahead of us to Heaven to prepare a way for us, so should we seek out others who know the truth, are wise in their counsel and are available to afford us the advantage of their insight and wisdom.
  7. Isaiah 49:8 Our tax planning and ability to  think ”outside the box” does not limit us to the status quo, while always being open to business, tax and paradigm changes. God promises to offer us favor, guidance and to lead us in the way that we should go.
  8. Isaiah 65:24 We return your calls within just a few business hours. If God promises to answer our call, while we are still speaking so should be answer others as soon as possible.
  9. Matthew 5:37 We value the truth of the Bible and look to apply His word in all phases of our business and personal life and not just on Sundays. Jesus tells us in the New Testament that we are to let your yes by yes an dour no, no and to not be ambivalent about the truth.
  10. Matthew 22:21 Don’t buy into false prophets who will lead you astray by telling you that the IRS is un-Constitutional. The Bible is clear that we all are to “Remit Unto Caesar what is his, but we are not required to give one penny more.

Luke 12:31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

United States CPA: Navajo Family Missions Reunion & 2011 Planning/Steering Committee

Taking Christianity Into the World

Well, can you believe that you’ve been home almost a whole month?  I hope by now you have settled back into a normal routine and gotten plenty of rest…at least enough to think about next year.  So many wonderful ideas are flowing about ways for us to help out on the reservation, things that we can do for next year to make the trip better and ways for all of us to stay in touch with each other.  We will be having our Reunion Celebration hopefully September 26th but I will confirm that later.

We are looking at and discussing ways to keep the fire lit until we can return to the reservation.  I hope to meet with every area that served on the trip and hear your thoughts, suggestions, complaints and ideas and hopefully that can start happening very soon.  Stay tuned for some upcoming ideas and if you have suggestions, please e-mail me and let me hear them.  Please continue to keep all of your teammates in your prayers.  BTW, our  mission team has a Face book page so if you are on Face book, please search Pueblo Pintado Summer Missions and join the group.

We are still heavily involved in Missions while Serving our Native Americans the Navajo on the desert of New Mexico. One of the cooler things added this past year is that we are mentoring young men and women in their walk with Christ, while teaching them how to restore Volkswagen Beetles. We also model for them Christ’s unconditional love by giving these vehicles to those in need. www.Bugs4Christ.webs.com Take a peek at our video at http://bit.ly/QS0V9  If you listen and watch with an open heart, it will change your world. United States CPA Advises on IRS Representation Issues

United States CPA Advises on IRS Representation Issues

Working with the IRS is not for the faint hearted or ill advised. The Bible teaches us throughout its text that we should seek the wise counsel of others and then to be and get the help of disciples who are willing to help lead us down the right path. Seek good Godly counsel from the best professionals you can find as it will pay many long term dividends.  Having Served in the United States as a CPA for decades I have learned again and again that seeking wise counsel is the beginning to wisdom. Therefore working with a CPA who is well versed in IRS Representation issues is your best option in dealing with the IRS towards successful IRS negotiation. The below is a sample letter a CPA/Tax Attorney might use to send to the IRS to begin to address open IRS tax issues. Though many issues on the surface may appear simple, their successful resolution is very rarely, if ever, a quick and easy process.

Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Atlanta GA 39901-0010

Enclosures: Power of Attorney, IRS notices dated 7-1-10 & 8-1-10 regarding the 2008 & 2009 tax years.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing you in a good faith attempt to come to terms over the above taxpayers’ present predicament with the IRS, get their returns filed, and to address their tax issues.  I am willing/eager to supply you with any information that you might need in order to process their file.

Since I have assumed the role as their financial advisor, I have consulted with them, and in good faith have pulled together the information that you need to file and amend their returns to the correct balances owed.

I have enclosed copies of  my power of attorney and notices from the IRS detailing the amounts owed per your files.

Per our records we show that:

-Their tax return for 2008 was amended in March, 2010 changing the amount due the IRS to $1000.

-Their tax return for 2009 was filed in April, 2010 showing the amount due the IRS of $1,500.

The above/enclosed tax notices reflect an amount due of $12,000 whereas the above returns reflect an amount due of $2,500. Please correct your records accordingly, while being sure to not that the taxpayers issued on 8-11-10 a check to pay the $2,500 balance in full.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to working with you to close their file.

Sincerely, John C. Dillard, CPA, PC,  Partner in Charge

How to Become a CPA in the United States

How to Become a CPA in the United States

Becoming a CPA in the United States is not for the faint hearted or the ill prepared, but it is for those who are seeking a solid career path, to greatly contribute back to society, and to own your own business down the road.

The rules and regulations of becoming a CPA vary from state to state but generally require:

-150 semester or 225 quarter hours at a four year accredited college or university which offers a baccalaureate degree (generally for most students this will mean five full time college years).

-20 semester or 30 quarter hours in accounting subjects at a four year accredited college or university which offers a baccalaureate degree. (generally for most students this will mean five full time college years).

-Registering for, preparing for and passing the Uniform CPA Examination, which is a four part test, which can now be taken in parts. The test may be among the hardest of any profession claiming pass rates of roughly 50 percent.

-After graduation an individual with have to work full time under the direct tutelage of a CPA in a Public CPA firm or under the direct supervision of a CPA for five years if working in a business/organization (i.e., private industry).

-After complying with all of the above a candidate is generally eligible to apply for a CPA license by state. Each state generally will then require 160 hours of CPE (Continuing Professional Education) every two years, while also being sure to have 16 hours of A & A (Accounting & Auditing).

As  each state establishes its own licensing rules it is best to consult with your own state’s licensing board. For example if you are in Georgia you may visit http://www.sos.ga.gov/plb/accountancy/licensure.htm My becoming a CPA of some thirty years ago has been one of the most treasured blessings God has ever bestowed on  my life.

Duluth CPA Advises Gwinnett/Atlanta Business Owners to Seek Wise Counsel

Duluth CPA Advises Gwinnett/Atlanta Business Owners to Seek Wise Counsel

In this age of high paced  information it is always prudent to think before you leap, to read all the fine print and to consider/have an attorney review all substantive contracts before you sign them. Using a CPA to get general business advice and then a good business attorney will do much to preclude you from making immediate/rushed decisions so that letters like the attached are never needed:

I just received a copy of the attached notice regarding renting your vacation rental. Please note the attached e-mail indicates that a contract was believed to be made by the renting agency whereas I intended solely to gain information about the on-site lake vacation rentals. Please correct your records accordingly as I had not intended, in any way, at this time, to commit to a rental period and was seeking solely to gain information about such as availability, rates, etc.

Accordingly please void your records to indicate there was no contract at this time.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. Sincerely,

Proverbs 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

The Bible teaches us throughout its text that we should seek the wise counsel of others and then to be and get the help of disciples who are willing to help lead us down the right path. Seek good Godly counsel from the best professionals you can find as it will pay many long term dividends.
