Atlanta/Alpharetta CPA on Finding Our Way to God…Taking Christianity Into the World

Frequently when we try to share God’s love with others we get tongue tied as we strive to me more insightful than we need be. When Jesus walked the earth it seemed as if He made all of the complicated things we see; simple.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

One of the talents God alone has blessed me with is one of exhortation. Over the last thirty years of my life, my focus has been predominantly how I can grow in my walk and my study of the Bible, I have discovered the richness, body and compassion of the New as well as the Old Testament. No longer do I see an angry God but how much he loves each and every one of us deeply and whose undeniable commitment to his people. John 14:6 is the verse that I go back to again and again as I seek to tell others of my Lord Jesus Christ. I have learned that by keeping it simple on my part, that God can do His work.

Atlanta CPA Takes Christianity Into the World…What Does Being a Christian CPA Mean

www.HisCPA.com

Frequently as Believers we make sharing a faith hard, while Jesus said that Christians would be known by their love. Whether you are Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist, or Presbyterian we are all united by our faith in Jesus Christ. Several years ago God laid on my hear that I should establish  a different kind of CPA firm — one that would bring the principles of Jesus Christ to the practice of Accounting.

During this time, his practice has been growing, as clients who are seeking a Christian accountant who believes in Christ’s principles take advantage of His CPA for their business accounting, personal financial planning, and tax preparation needs. My CPA practice is how I provide for my family. But our speaking engagements, our books, our mission work and our involvement in the pastoral relations committee is what we are. We are a part of the Body of Christ, made for a specific purpose and destined to be with Him forever.

Below is my testimony on how he was led to create a Christian CPA practice to serve business owners throughout Metro Atlanta, America and the World.

Managing my own successful CPA practice in Gwinnett County for over twenty years, I continue to feel God’s calling on my heart and his desire for me to be more about Him. I have always felt it was my mission to witness to those I came in contact with in both my business and social contacts, but God continued to lay it on my heart that He wanted much more.

Even though  I was willing to share my Christian faith with people to whom I came in contact with, God was calling and he wanted me to be much more overt, but loving, to share the love of God. Having practiced the Golden Rule in my CPA firm for years, God was calling to be the true center of my life and not just a major player.

With my new bride now of six years, we set out on a journey that has led us on mission trips, publishing books, changing Georgia law, and starting a new accounting firm, HIS CPA, P.C.

Though we wanted to start the company at the beginning of the year God made it necessary to start the firm immediately as He wanted it done then and not later. To this end we have been faithful and continue to spread the Good News of our faith and Christianity to anyone who would like to hear.

Our faith and our lives intersect. Though we still have much to learn to grow to be like Him, we have studied his word and continue to work in Bible studies to share his love with others. My CPA firm is committed to the One who made me and we act on this daily by “Serving HIM by serving You…one tax return at a time”.

Atlanta CPA Teaches Addressing IRS Notices for Atlanta Taxpayers

Atlanta CPA Teaches Addressing IRS Notices for Atlanta Taxpayers

Below is a sample of a notice I might receive from a taxpayer regarding their receipt of an IRS Tax notice detailing their concerns and questions. Addressing IRS notices and payroll tax issues are the bane for many taxpayers and the hiring of a competent payroll service is your best bet to ensure that you can work on your business rather than getting mired down in burdensome administrative details.

I have a question about the attached IRS penalty letter I received today. It says that there is an Informational Return for 2008 that was not filed in a timely manner. I don’t have a clue what this could be about or if it’s some kind of mistake. When you amended our 2008 and 2007  S Corp. returns, was there any informational return that need to be sent also, such as a W-2/W-3 or something else?

If none was required with the amended return, should I contact who did the original 2008 return?  And what other informational returns could be involved, other than a W-2/W-3 for our salary?  I never got a copy of the W-3 from our prior accountant.  All he gave me was a W-2 to file with our personal return.  I think he also sent out all the 1099s that year, so could the 1096 form also be the late informational return? Please tell me anything you can about what would cause this problem.

Payroll is the largest and most burdensome administrative responsibility for a business owner. Whether you have one employee or a thousand, both the IRS and your state has a myriad of payroll reports and deadlines for which you are required to complete. Unfortunately there is not a one-stop shop to pay and report all of the varying deadlines and taxes. However, there is a solution that makes the reporting of payroll dramatically more seamless than if you strive to go it on your own.

The easy part of preparing a payroll is the actual paycheck itself, but that is where the simplicity stops and the difficulty begins as there are a dramatic list of reports and varying deadlines to meet. To this end I have recapped below some of the reports and their significance. Here is the letter of response I forwarded:

The letter you forwarded indicates that it is for a Civil Penalty which typically indicates payroll taxes returns. Might I suggest you first review all of your 2008 payroll tax returns to see if they were all timely filed and paid. As it is in your best interest to always to hire an Atlanta Payroll Service to handle all of your payroll needs as you could then forward this notice for their review and for them to both resolve and to pay if indeed they caused the penalty. Parsonage Allowances for Ministers

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Ministers’ Compensation and Housing Allowance

A frequently misunderstood portion of tax law centers around the a minister’s income and his parsonage/housing allowance. Generally speaking a minister’s parsonage or rental allowance is excluded from his gross income when calculating his taxable income for income tax purposes. However, the parsonage allowance is not deductible when determining a pastors self-employment taxes that are due and payable.

If you are a Minister and you receive part of your salary (for ministerial services) an amount officially designated (before payment is made) monies officially/specifically designated as a rental/housing allowance, you can exclude from your gross income the amount that is used to provide/rent a home. This exclusion is limited to the lesser of the fair market value of the home of the amount specifically designated in advance as a rental/housing allowance or the actual amount used to provide a home and cannot exceed what is reasonable pay for your services.

If housing is provided by your congregation as pay for your ministerial services, the exclusion cannot be more than what would be reasonable pay for your services. This essentially would dictate that your parsonage allowance cannot exceed the amount of your wages as detailed on line 7 of your Form 1040.

If a minister owns their own home and receives a housing allowance as part of their pay, the exclusion cannot be more than the smaller of:
-The actual cost to provide a home.
-The amount officially designated (in advance) as a rental or housing allowance.
-The fair market rental value of the home.
-Amount of what would be deemed reasonable pay for ministerial services.
-Allowance cannot exceed the amount of wages on line 7 of Form 1040/W-2 wages.

Although a minister can exclude the parsonage/housing allowance for income tax purposes, it is not a deduction when determining self-employment taxes.

The above example would reflect what the IRS would refer to as a common law employee. Even if a minister were to be able to qualify as a common law/statutory employee and to pay their own FICA/Medicaid taxes or Self-Employment taxes, it is this author’s opinion that it would be better for the minister if the church treated them as an employee and withheld all applicable FICA/Medicaid Taxes on their Gross Wages and any parsonage allowance.

John is a native of Atlanta and has practiced as a CPA for twenty-five years and his firm tailors their services to the needs of business clients.

While graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1979 from Georgia State University with a BBA in Accounting he was named to two honor societies, John has a successful  CPA firm and recently started a new CPA firm  called His CPA, P.C. John felt God’s tugging on his heart to step out and to be a beacon of light to share the word of Christ. Join him as he Takes Christianity Into the World. His belief and values are proudly displayed on the firms website at www.HISCPA.com John assisted in having the Georgia State Supreme Court overturn the Georgia Trade Secrets Act of 1990. Recently John felt God’s calling and set out and changed Georgia state law by passage of the Crime Victims Act of 2005 which requires people committing major crimes against children to pay for their medical and counseling care. Speaking loud and boldly, John believes that Christ alone is the centerpiece and the capstone of Christianity. Exhorting others to speak boldly of their faith while doing so himself, John looks to fulfill the Great Commission at home in the community where he works as well as abroad. Using his published works, Overcoming Life’s 9/11’s: Job’s Journey & A Voice of One: Nehemiah’s Prayer as a backdrop John’s Keynote Speaking is an encouragement for all those seeking to be like Christ and encourages Lay Ministers to do great things in God’s name.

WWJD…What Would Jesus Do if He Was a CPA

WWJD…What Would Jesus Do if He Was a CPA

Award Winning CPA Serving Grayson, Lawrenceville, Snellville & Beyond

We strive to live our lives by a higher standard; not just to live by the world’s but to live by God’s standards. Though I am challenged to be the very best CPA I can be by helping clients keep their tax bills as low as legally possible. However I believe as a CPA and a Believer I am called to a much higher standard in helping clients develop tools and resources to plan for much more than their taxes. A CPA is the best one to begin this process and after a CPA has met with a client and determined much of their financial picture and tax issues, it is time to take the relationship to the next level and to help clients determine a multitude of issues including:

-Buying Life Insurance. Being sure to have enough life insurance to take care of your family, debts and needed living expenses is essential to ensuring that your entire family and your legacy will not be changed by your passing.

-Buying Disability Insurance. Though life insurance is for your survivors, disability insurance is for you, in the event of a life threatening illness or injury that leaves you unable to both take care of yourself and to fend for our family.

-Setting up a Will. If you pass away without a will, then the state will decide what happens to your children and to your assets. A well drafted will enables others to ensure that your last wishes are followed out and adhered to.

-Setting up a Trust. Frequently taxpayers can use trusts to ensure that their assets and desires are carried out both during and after their lives. Trusts can be set up for a myriad of issues ranging from helping to save estate taxes to leaving your assets to your church or favorite charity.

-Consideration of Guardianship. I want to know who my children will live with if I pass and even more so if my wife and pass at the same time. My children are gifts from God and I want to ensure that they are loved, protected and encouraged even if I am not around.

-Estate Planning. For taxpayers who exceed the federal mandated thresh-hold for the payment of estate taxes, proper planning can do much to both limit the tax bill that will otherwise ultimately become due. Also proper planning can be used to ensure that assets such as a business can be passed to heirs without having to sell it to pay the required estate taxes.

-Setting up a Business Credit Line. Frequently a business credit line will be the difference between a business that succeeds and fails and one that is marginally vs. very profitable. A line of credit can do much to help you get through tough business cycles as well as to take advantage of opportunities in the marketplace and growth opportunities.

-Procuring an Personal Equity Line on Your Home. An equity line on your home is essentially financial insurance. As your build equity in your home and your credit score, many/most banks will put in an equity line on your home allowing you instant access to emergency funds if ever needed.

-Investing. Our natural tendency is to buy high and sell low. A well informed and trained adviser can help educate you in the many skills that are available to help ensure that you make prudent investment decisions as well as to plan for retirement.

-Planning for College/Education Expenses. Planning for college is perhaps one of the most important financial decision you will ever make in your life and the life of your child. Being prepared for college and their expenses will help ensure your financial future and give your children the best chance for initial career success.

-Setting up a Retirement Account for Your Business/Personally. Getting ready for the  “Golden Years” should be a priority for us all. Americans have a tendency to live to the hilt and to ignore the future and nothing could be worse for yourself or those you love.

Though my short term goal for my clients is to save tax dollars, my larger goal is that they have a better life by wise investing and prudent choices. In order for me to accomplish this I have to always remember WWJD…If He Was A CPA.

Straight Dealings with the IRS is Your Best Opportunity to Audit Success

Working with the IRS in an honest open and straightforward basis is your best bet to ensure that your audit experience, to the extent that it can be, is an success. Frequently I see clients who are audited because they have a business and attempt to prepare their returns on their own. Tax law should never be attempted to be understood or appropriately applied by anyone other than a CPA who is well experienced and seasoned in such matters. Just as Believers we have an Intercessor to talk to God on our behalf so should clients retain a CPA to work to ensure that they pay only their lowest legal possible tax.
