Atlanta Christian Author’s book Low Country Calling by John Dillard CPA

Low Country Calling by John Dillard CPA

David, Low Country Calling’s main character, is introduced as a young man who is just out of school.  Taking his southern heritage with him, David is soon off to Officer Cadet School where he meets Alice with whom he shares a mutual attraction and a magical walk along the beach.  Their first meeting, a magical moment leads them to want to discover more of what God has in store for them.

As David and Alice get to know each other better they find they share a similar upbringing, and a vast amount of similarities.  David and Alice share their first kiss and begin their courtship together.  Soon David graduates at the top of his class from Officer Cadet School and then from Basic as a Second Lieutenant.  Beginning to feel God’s tugging on his heart to grow deeper, David begins a Bible study to spread God’s love.  Join David in the cockpit of an F-18 simulator as he amazes himself as well as his instructor.

David begins Aviator school where his reputation as a leader continues to grow and he meets Professor Kendrick who in full dress whites gives the cadets a speech to stir their heart to patriotism, honor and a drive to excel.  Clearly moved, David redoubles his efforts to do his very best.  David and Alice ‘s romance continues to bring them closer as they invite God to join them in all levels of their relationship, even when they hit a bump in the road.

David awakens early one Sunday and heads out to the highest knoll on campus where he prays and communes with God himself.  Praying for God’s guidance and blessings for this relationship with Alice, God answers his prayer and calls and tugs on David’s heart to seek Him even more.  Graduating at the top of his class, David receives the assignment he asks for and is to report to Pensacola, Florida for Flight School.  David and Alice’s days together are spent helping David with his studies as they strive to plan their life together.  David successfully completes Flight School in Pensacola and readies himself to fulfill his lifelong dream to be a Naval Aviator.

David begins his active duty on the aircraft carrier, The Roosevelt.  Soon they are off in a task force of ships to help bring peace and democracy to the Middle East.  Meeting his new RIO (Radio Intercept Office), Steve White who will assist him in flying the F-18 Super Hornet while on station in the Mediterranean Sea and over Iraq.  First flying several routine missions, David and Steve soon find themselves embroiled in a deadly game of chase as a SAM (Surface to Air Missile) rockets towards them at Mach 3.  Trying to evade the deadly missile, David attempts something never before done in combat in an effort to save Steve and his lives.  Join them in the cockpit as white knuckling suspense heightens with every turn and thrust of the F-18 Super Hornet and the deadly SAM.

David continues his routine patrols over the Iraqi theater.  On what starts out to be a routine flight they are startled by a warning light indicating a problem with their engines.  Doing everything they can to rectify the problem, they shift to back up systems and procedures all of which fail.  Soon the F-18 Super Hornet shudders its last as both of its engines stop.  As the plane falls, David and Steve send a mayday and eject from the rapidly falling craft.  Alone now and on the run in the desert floor of Iraq, David and Steve face their greatest challenge yet as they stare face to face with their own mortality and terrorists who are striving to capture them.  Facing certain death if captured, they begin a trek through the desert floor towards their extraction point.  With danger at every turn, they find themselves now being hunted in a life and death struggle for survival.

David and Steve begin their trek across the Iraqi desert towards their rendezvous point.  Traveling at night to avoid detection, they find themselves hunted on unfamiliar terrain.  Hopelessly out-armed, David and Steve try to stay one step ahead of the terrorists who would make them their captives.  Facing certain death if caught, they fight for their very survival as their pursuers near.  Back on board the aircraft carrier, Admiral Wyrick and Major Benjamin Taylor team up to gather Intel, which will guide them to developing a plan to bring David and Steve safely home.  Admiral Wyrick vows to do everything he can and to provide all the needed resources to provide for their safe extraction.

Running and on the lam, David and Steve strive to stay one step ahead of the terrorist who are pursuing them.  Facing capture and their imminent death, David and Steve are hunted by their enemy day and night.  All alone on the run, David and Steve pull together in a life and death struggle to escape their would be captors.  On board the aircraft carrier, all onboard feverishly plan for a safe extraction.  Admiral Wyrick and Major Benjamin Taylor lead all on board in gathering Intel to ensure their rescue effort will successful.

Final plans and preparations are made for the extraction force as they begin on their rescue effort.  Flying over the Mediterranean Sea they are soon feet dry and taking the necessary fuel required to complete their journey.  David and Steve leave their relative safety of their hiding and head west towards the assigned extraction point.  Once there, they immediately begin reconnaissance of the area finding a terrorist encampment.  Retreating to the very center of the established perimeter, David and Steve huddle closely to the ground as the three SH-60B Seahawk helicopters fly overhead and then turn towards their unsuspecting prey.  Amidst the reign of fear about him, David hears Gods call for him to go into full time ministry.  Aware of his God given mission in life, David watches with a quiet confidence as AGM-114 Hellfire missiles destroy his pursuers.  Soon he finds himself on board the lead Seahawk headed back to the aircraft carrier, The Roosevelt and the fulfill his God given destiny.

David now safely back on board The Roosevelt, finally is able to relax and rejuvenate.  Rescued from certain capture from the desert floor of Iraq, David celebrates with Steve and those who rescued him.  Offering thanks to God, David revels in his faith and with those who put themselves in harms way for his safe return.  Admiral Wyrick throws a grand feast; beyond David’s expectation and thanks all those who risked it all to bring them home safely.  Soon, granted a furlough, David returns back to Quantico, VA to spend time with Alice.  Back to the site of his original trailing and where David and Alice’s romance first began to bud, David and Alice find the time and distance away has deepened their love and commitment.  Going back further to their roots they return to Pastor Barnes’s church where David witness’s firsthand God’s provision in the growth of his church and shares God’s calling on his heart to full time pasturing back in his hometown of Charleston.

Coming back to the Low Country of Charleston, South Carolina, David comes home to find it even rosier than before.  A newfound God ordained mission, David finds divine purpose in his life and a God-ordained path.  Once back home, David proposes marriage to his one true soul mate that rejoices at his offer and readily accepts his hand in marriage.  David and Alice announce their plans to his family who heartily welcome Alice into their family.  His bride beside him, David begins to think about their life and their service to God together.  Opting for a mid-day run, David parks and jogs over the Cooper River Bridge.  Enjoying the ambiance of it all, David admires the architectural beauty of the bridge, the historic city of Charleston and all of its fine homes.  Hearing God’s prompting, David jogs down an older section of the city as he soon finds his destiny.  Coming alongside an old historic church, David hears God’s voice, “Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem and we will no longer be in disgrace.”  David comes face to face with an old church whose walls lay in ruins as God lay on his heart that it was here David was to start his church and to begin his full time ministry as pastor.  Tears of joy roll down his face as David hears the Lion of Judah Low Country Calling to save the lost and to shepherd God’s flock.  Committing his life to God’s service, David commits to living his life for Christ and to the pre-ordained path God chose.  Just as two millennia ago when God led the Jews in the desert, He still speaks to all who will listen.

His CPA PC Says…What Does Tax Law Say About Having Adequate Tax Documentation?

His CPA PC Says…What Does Tax Law Say About Having Adequate Tax Documentation?

The IRS tax law, surrounding the area of documenting most general business expenses, is generally summarized into three general areas.  Failure to satisfy all of these areas may result in an otherwise potentially deductible receipt being voided.  Tax law does not summarize the deductible tax items in this fashion.  However, following these general guidelines will greatly assist in determining both the validity of a deduction as well as the maintenance of substantive collaborating documentation.  The general guidelines are:

Business Intent

It should be clear from an unbiased observer that a deduction was incurred for the furtherance of the business.  This includes advertising, administrative duties, overhead and expenses incurred to produce or provide the product or service to be delivered.  Often direct expenses incurred in those efforts will be most obvious, as the absence of this occurrence will result in a product not being delivered.

For many issues it is necessary to look at the intent or the reason why an expense was incurred.  For example, the sponsoring of a golf tournament most frequently is done by business to further its advertising efforts.  By raising awareness of its participants and attendees, business’s often underwrite and support such events to raise name recognition, gain market share and to increase brand loyalty.

What is Valid Tax Documentation?

IRS tax law has often been misinterpreted as to what is required to adequately substantiate business expenditures.  Frequently a credit card receipt will suffice but that is only for those times and circumstances where it is most obvious as to what expenditure was incurred.  For example, a credit card receipt for a meal at a restaurant where a dinner was purchased, which documents the individual/business’s presence, and the nature of the business discussion should suffice as adequate documentation to substantiate a deduction.  However the best documentation will be to ensure that you attach a copy of the itemized invoice. The individual/business entertained would typically be an employee or independent contractor of the business, a past, present or future client the customer hopes, is, or plans to serve, someone who the business networks/prospects with in order to produce new business or a trade or services supplier (such as someone from whom your business purchases either product, supplies, or services.)

In the event that expenditures are larger or would not be clear by the payee, care should be taken to obtain a copy of the actual receipt, agreement, memorandum, or a copy of the contract for which expenditures are incurred.  Receipt/document/contracts should be clear as to the item being purchased for the business as being either an integral critical expense or those whose ancillary intended purposes (such as advertising) are clear.  Absent the clear evidence of either of two components it would be wise to add documentation to the receipt accordingly.

Scope of Valid Business Expense Documentation Receipts

Tax law does not require any receipts below a certain level.  For all expenditures above this threshold, a receipt is required. To help out in coding of the credit card statements please be sure to attach both the credit card receipt as well as the actual receipt from the selling establishment. Tax law requires you to have the actual receipts and is not required to accept the credit card receipt as proof of a valid business expenditure. Tax law requires detailed invoices/receipts for all items over $75.

The  larger a receipt is, the more emphasis one would want to place on an expense to be sure that adequate documentation is received/available.  Typically, most business receipts provide sufficient documentation, as usually items/services are typically well detailed to assure good communication, a clear understanding, and therefore, prompt payment.

Where the vendor or supplier does not supply appropriate documentation, and the expenditure is larger in nature, it would be prudent to prepare the documentation yourself and have the vendor or supplier sign and date it indicating their approval and agreement.  Absent this option being readily available, one would want to forward written documentation by regular mail or electronically by e-mail, a confirmation of the details of the transaction.  Written confirmation of this type is one of the most frequent mistakes business owners make.  Often, this simple step alone will be the key determining issue if a dispute or litigation occurs.  I have personally witnessed this issue alone being the key decision making point on which a judge or jury will rule.

Luke 12:31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

His CPA PC Says….QuickBooks is a Good Financial Package for Atlanta Small Business Owners

Bookkeeping for Business Owners

A CPA who is looking out for your best interests are most apt to also refer other outside services such as a payroll company, which is most always a much faster and more economical option than either the CPA or the client preparing them. Also items such as preparing sales tax reports can easily be taught to client personnel saving potential tens of thousands of dollars over a ten-year period.

A CPA who serves God and practices the Golden Rule, who has some very specific advice as to a direction for your company, will share the information in the first meeting not waiting to be sure to have retained a client, desiring the best for a client rather than solely the service of their own needs and desires. Frequently CPA’s have shared insightful advice that clients have in turn taken back to their present CPA for compliance. Although this is certainly desirous in most all respects as we strive to serve, it fails to contemplate the reasons why advice was not forthcoming originally. As Believers we are exhorted to excellence in all things and it is to that end a hiring manager looking for a trusted CPA should spend adequate time and effort reviewing a CPA’s resume, credentials, and references.

Hire a Christian CPA as they will be committed to you and your business’s success. The below is a sample of a letter we might send along to a client seeking to help critique their internal financial statements and to guide them in proper financial reporting:

To get down the road to get your bookkeeping for your internal data finalized I went ahead and forwarded you the attached.

Please get to me today copies of where the checks were deposited into your payroll account which you said were written off of your operating account, and that you identified as transfers. Please forward me the pages on the operating account circling these transfers showing me how they reconcile to the deposits listed in your payroll account.

Please close on the General Ledger the Money Market account, as per your advice it is closed.

Please when printing both the year to date and the current month P/L reports before printing click in the Top Left Corner modify Report and then % on Income. This will allow you/the management to evaluate costs in relation to their percentage of total revenue. This will help you highlight variances for evaluation, critique and to take corrective management action to bring costs into control.

That to update your tax planning I need what you anticipate you will net in the business before any salaries or shareholder distributions to yourself.

I still need a copy of where the IRS accepted your S Election.

Please review your P/L accounts to see if you purchased any fixed assets in the business that you need to re-class as Fixed Assets on the Balance Sheet. I suggest capitalizing all items over $1000.

Duluth GA Christian CPA Firm Teaches Gwinnett Business Owners

A large part of our practice centers around helping our clients get to where they want to go. Much of that has to do with putting ourselves in the place of our clients and indeed serving them the way we would want to be served. The below is a sample letter we might send a client to assist with and properly guide them through the tax preparation process:

Got your corporate data today…to complete return I need ASAP:

What the face amount of the Life Insurance as tax law will not allow us to deduct more than the equivalent of a 50K face Life Insurance policy.

Please be reminded that tax law will not allow us to deduct the $6,000 of Medical Insurance Premiums paid on behalf of owners of an S Corporation unless they also have an W-2 at least equal to this full amount.

Please be reminded that:

Tax Law requires all active employee owners to take a fair and reasonable salary given position and profit. The best indication of what this amount would be what an owner would have to pay an independent party to perform their official duties.

Please be reminded that I still need the data for the personal return.

Duluth GA CPA on Working With CPA’s & Business Professionals

Though life may sometimes get us down, be sure that you work with those who will always encourage and support you in all that you do. The below is a sample excerpt from a letter that we might receive from a client who is seeking guidance and encouragement:

John. Sent in the payment for the changing of our S Corporation. Thank you for getting in touch with me. I know I was behind on that and I needed to be reminded of my responsibility. The last month and a half has been extremely difficult on my family for numerous reasons and I got behind on a lot of things. I was almost at a point of ending the business. I am going to proceed with my S Corporation but on a part-time basis while working another job. Some unforeseen personal and business issues came about and I will have to do some soul searching and re-examining. You have been upfront with me and prudent in your business, thank you for all you have done. Forgive me for my absence in calling or discussing matters, I guess I was depressed at the things encountered.

One good thing from all this is that my wife and I are expecting our fourth child. One of the many reasons I will be scaling back on the business. I hope we can continue to do business but if you feel we can’t I understand and will compensate you for your time. Thank you again for everything.

The Below is my response:

I am most sorry things have been a bit tough lately but always keep in mind that God has a greater plan for you and your life. Keep the faith, seek God in all that you do and He will honor, guide and bless your obedience.

Congratulations on having your fourth child, as children are one of the best gifts ever from above. Remember to train them up in the way that they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.

I will most definitely be honored to continue to serve as your CPA for this and for many years to come.

In the Matchless Name of Christ.

Give Your Life to God While There’s Still Time…Taking Christianity Into the World

People Get Ready; Jesus is Coming Soon.

“…in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” 1 Corinthians 15:52

Our lives here are not guaranteed beyond the present moment. So we should like innocent children, fear from sin and worry by total reliance on God as our Lord and Savior. Matthew 6:34 advises us to live in the present and to not let the troubles of tomorrow unduly worry us. I was reminded recently, by the this  video  http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=WUQYJ77qa50   of how precious life is and how we should value each and every moment and to not defer any decision about your salvation and not take any chances of where you will spend eternity.

I have known many who were here today and then gone tomorrow, as God calls those he loves home. Maybe you have a friend today that you have unresolved conflict with or need to reach out to. Perhaps there is someone in your life that you have not told you love them lately or could there be something in your own life, that you still need to ask God for forgiveness and to repent. Stop today, turn from what gets in your way from being all that God made you to be and pursue God’s destiny for you and your life. Though no one knows exactly when the end times will occur, the rash of wars, earthquakes, tsunami’s, and evil about tells us that scripture is unfolding before our eyes. People Get Ready; Jesus is Coming Soon.

Daniel 12:1 [The End Times] “…There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.”

Dare to Attempt Something so Great for the Kingdom of God that it is doomed to failure, lest Christ be in it!

Atlanta/Duluth GA  CPA Presents 7’s heart: Seeking to Serve Christ in All Ways…Taking Christianity Into the World

Serving/Feeding the Homeless of Atlanta: Serving the Least, the Lost and the Last

Word for the week: Strength In Weakness. Matt 20:20-28

No one wants to be weak, so we find ways to appear strong. Some of us use the force of our emotions to manipulate people. Others use the force to control people, and some use intellect to intimidate. Although these create an illusion of strength, they are signs of weakness.  When we are truly strong, we have the courage to admit our limitations and to acknowledge our dependence on God. As a result, true strength looks a lot like weakness. When the apostle Paul prayed that an affliction would be taken from him, God answered, ” My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength us made perfect in weakness.” (Cor.12:9) Paul responded with these troubling words: “when I am weak, then I am strong.” Toward the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, some of His disciples were striving for positions of prominence. Jesus used their argument as an opportunity to teach them that we willingly assume positions of weakness ( Matt 20:26).

This is a hard truth. I prefer the illusion of strength to  the reality of weakness. But God wants us to realize that true strength comes when we stop trying to control people and start serving them instead. Whoever decides to become great among you, let him be your servant. Matthew 20:26

I would like to thank all the volunteers that came out to the bridges Saturday. I was touched to see so many willing hearts going and serving the last, lost, and the least. I also want to say thank you to all the volunteers that help keep Gods ministry running.  There are so many blessings being poured out and so many prayers being answered inside the ministry. Glory be to God!!!

Oswald stated that we should not look for God to come in any particular way, but do look for him. The way to make room for him is to expect him to come, but not in a certain way.  Let God surprise you!! Live in a constant state of expectancy. Every day that God  gives you,. allow him to guide you and trust in his word because he will fulfill his promises. We are expecting God each and every day to show up and show out inside of His ministry.  Don’t put boundaries on God, especially on what is already his. Thank you for your hearts, thank you for your support, and thank you for the continual love that you pour out for this ministry. May God Bless you.

Love, Pastor 7

I wanted to be sure you are aware of the issues at hand and correspondence to date:

-We initially met on  2-2-10 and discussed the urgency of filing all of your returns ASAP, getting your 2009 & 2010 tax payments current and submitting an Offer in Compromise, if you qualify, while going over IRS Form 433A, Form 433B and Form 656,

-On 2-15-10 I sent guidelines of the general rules and urgency of submitting an Offer in Compromise.

-On 2-22-10 I filed my Power of Attorney asking for time to file all of your returns and to file an Offer in Compromise.

-From 2-12-10 to 3-3-10 I see three separate pieces of correspondence as to you reminding of details and urgency to file Offer in Compromise, if you qualify ASAP.

-Met with you on 3-4-10 to discuss urgency of addressing unpaid taxes.

-This will confirm our discussions that you are aware of the need to pay your taxes as you go or the IRS will not even consider an Offer in Compromise.

-This will confirm our conversations that I suggest that ASAP after we complete the 2010 tax planning above that you retain a payroll service to pay/keep your taxes current.

I will send you under separate cover information about keeping your filings and tax payments current.

If you fail to meet the deadlines above I believe the IRS ASAP will:

-File Liens

Atlanta/Duluth GA CPA Presents Men Step  Up…Taking Christianity Into the World

I wanted to let you know about something that has been going on for men in Gwinnett County for about 4 years.

One of the things I have been looking for is a place to grow that is relevant to me as a man in the marketplace. I think I’ve finally found it in a forum called Men Step Up.  This is a weekly forum where men have an opportunity to look at real issues, step up to the truth, and personally interact with the Word of God and one another.

A lot gets done in an hour (6:30am – 7:30am on Friday).  They serve coffee & doughnuts, followed by a brief opening that sets up a lie commonly held by most men, and the truth about that lie.  Then, there is 20 minutes of discussion with no more that 4 people at a table.  One of those 4 is a table leader who directs the conversation for the other 3 to be heard.  The most important thing that happens is each man takes the specific verse of the week and meditates on it and then discusses what jumps out to him.  Then the discussion is opened up to the room and a large group wrap-up takes place.  It is amazing what comes out of this simple approach.

Men Step Up has been around for about 10 years with its origins in Alpharetta.  It now has a subscription based on line offering that is available to any man all over the world.  Check out www.menstepup.com

Locally, Men Step Up – Gwinnett meets every Friday at California Dreaming at 6:30am (I-85 & Old Peachtree Rd. Exit 109).
