Atlanta CPA Presents: Pastor 7 and Witnessing/Serving the Homeless of Atlanta

Our Back-to-School concert and day of events went great and we are so thankful for each person that helped make that happen! We pray you were as blessed through the fellowship and worship as we were. We have been asking for 80 plastic containers to slide under the beds and they were provided last week! It is so great to watch God provide for each one of our needs every day! He is our Portion and gives us exactly what we need when we need it! All praise and honor go to Him! In the past couple of weeks, we have seen families and women be blessed with their own places and be able to move on from the Garden. We rejoice with them as God takes them into their next season of life and pray that the seeds that were planted here will continue to grow as they now go out and make disciples of those God brings into their paths! Join us in praying that they will find Bible-teaching churches and will continue to stand on the Word of God no matter where the Lord takes them!

The Lord has blessed me with two servants of the Lord who both serve here full-time and are missionaries to the ministry. Please prayerfully consider sponsoring them financially each month as they seek to serve the Lord with their whole hearts. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

I had the unique opportunity to meet with two college age men today who had begun a new venture to not only help support themselves a bit but more importantly to be both “Eco-Friendly” and to Help Make a Difference in this World by sharing part of their efforts with others who are less fortunate throughout the world. I was not only honored by their presence but the ability to help donate back to our new generation by offering Godly wisdom, wise counsel and encouragement. For it is when we give back to others that we are most like Jesus Christa and can best answer the question: WWJD – What Would Jesus Do.

For me I have learned that the best ways I can do this is to be fully emotionally present where I am at all times, seek to always look to serve others by kindness and deed and to look to the best in others. For it is often in the simple things both said and unsaid where we are most apt to lift up someone when they need it most. Below is a sample letter I might send after meeting a new associate to send both support and encouragement. So today I ask you….are you seeking all of the chances you have in your life to be like Him?

It was great meeting you and having a chance to talk with you about your business. That was my first chance to attend a meeting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I met some really interesting people and hopefully made some good business contacts. As I mentioned, I am a CPA and have over 30 years experience. The first page of Form 1040 is used to calculate the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income. While many people think of their income as what is reported on form W-2, there are some other additions (and possibly some deductions) that have to be made as well. Itemizing deductions on your personal return can result in paying a smaller tax. However the rules on what can be deducted and what can’t are fairly strict. Using a guide/CPA and a tax checklist are your first step to ensuring that an accurate fair and just return and to ensure that you pay only your lowest legal possible tax. Below is letter we might utilize to help a client ensure their returns are both complete and correct:

To complete your return I need for you to use the tax form I have on the contact page of my website to reflect your corporate data and make the below changes.

You did not show the $40K of Gross Wages on your recap that is on your personal W-2.

You did not show the beginning checkbook balance off of last year’s tax return of $7,000.

Please be sure to show your year-end checkbook balance while being sure that deposits plus beginning cash less expenditures equals the year end checkbook balance.

Please list the Tax you paid if payroll taxes as payroll taxes, otherwise please identify as to what it is.

Please put bank charges into office supplies. Keeping your chart of accounts current, up to date and usable are essential to good business & tax management.

There is no need to give me totals by individual month, just the totals for the year.

-Did you ever pay the state income taxes on the prior amended personal income tax returns as these will be deductible on Schedule A of your personal return as an itemized expense. Per my notes you owed GA $1000 for 2008 and that you are making monthly payments. Please confirm if this is what you are paying on. As the interest and penalties are not tax deductible, we need to prorate what State Tax has been paid. Please advise regarding the above and then when the payments started, monthly amount, when they will be complete and total to be paid total via state payment plan.

-Please use the below link for the valuation of your donated items to Goodwill and send to me detailed itemization reflecting these totals

-It initially appears as if we might be able to claim Earned Income Credit (for lower income years), which is a credit available if your children live with you full time and if you are the only one who can claim them. Please review/advise.

Tentatively it looks like that you will be due refunds from IRS of approx. $2500 and from GA $400. The larger refund from IRS is due to your lower income year and your possible qualifying for the Earned Income Credit. Please review advise.

Although there is no income tax paid by as S Corporation when the annual tax return is filed to the IRS. However, as a part of the corporate return which is prepared, a Form 1120S, there is an attached schedule which shows each owners respective ownership percentage and via a Form K-1 for which each shareholder should reflect on their personal return. K-1 profits, losses, and shareholder distributions are all required by tax law to be issued based upon the each shareholders ownership percentage. In order for losses to be deductible a shareholder has to have a positive tax basis, which is a component of past profits, losses, and loans to and from the business. If a shareholder has no basis to cover losses reported on a K-1, they are by tax law considered to be “suspended losses” and can be rolled forward to future years when the shareholder has positive basis, which can be created by future years profits or the shareholder loaning money to the business. Below is a sample letter we might send a client to ensure that to the extent legally possible, that tax basis is maintained in an S Corporation in order to take S Corporation losses:

Got the information you forwarded for your personal return and have already gotten started. Just wanted to confirm my understanding that the $50,000 Credit Line on the company books was done in the company name, rather in your name personally. Please advise/confirm. In the future if you have to get a loan to fund any business needs, if possible, get the loan in your name personally and then have you loan the monies to the business. That way you will have tax basis in the company that will allow us to deduct the losses as reflected on our 2009 K-1 and will not have to roll them forward to 2010/future year returns.

S Corporation owner’s should report the K-1 profit, which is based upon their share of the business and not the amount of their shareholder distributions. This is a common misnomer about S Corporations and often leads to confusion for the new business owner. To that end it is best to remember that you pay taxes on the profits when you make them and not when you take them. For example generally speaking if your business nets $100,000 and you are the sole owner, you will pay taxes on $100,0000 whether you take zero dollar of shareholder distributions, a $100,000 or any number in between. Thus if you were to have a $100,000 profit in any given year and take no distributions then you would be able, absent any other issues, to take shareholder distributions in subsequent years with no additional tax responsibility as these monies would have already been taxed.

A Company’s Financial statements are often misused and abused. They are often ornately presented with accountant’s opinions ranging from audits to compilations. Often we even find a statement of cash flows and financial footnotes. What do these statements tell us? Numbers and data when prettily presented often are an accountant’s representation of the financial status of an entity.

I believe that financial statements without narratives, analysis of trends, and a review of expenditures are nothing more than formal proof that the bank account has been reconciled and that everything balances. Data without thorough critique is useless. Helping a business owner keep and maintain sound internal data and financial statements should be the predominant focus of the CPA. A Certified Public Accountant can do much to guide you to the proper chart of accounts, financial statement presentation and account classification. The below is a sample excerpt that we might forward a client to assist the business owner/entrepreneur in maintaining adequate books and records:

To record 2009 Depreciation Expense, Debit Depreciation Expense on the Profit & Loss and Credit Accumulated Depreciation on the Balance Sheet for $16,000.
