Sugarloaf United Methodist Church is Helping With the Jobless Rate in Duluth

On Friday the Labor Department reported that the U.S. unemployment rate was 10.2% last month.  That was more than expected and the highest rate in more than 26 years.  With employers continuing to cut more jobs than forecast, the economy is still struggling to recover from the recession.  State unemployment rates for October will not be released until later this month, but Georgia was at 10.1% in September and is typically higher than the national unemployment rate.  Our community at Sugarloaf UMC has not been spared.  Kerry Lauria told me Sunday that she knows of at least 75 families in our congregation with one or more unemployed breadwinners, and many more are under-employed.  So, what can you do?

I hope you’ll give serious consideration to joining the Sugarloaf CrossLink group on LinkedIn.  Here’s why:

  • If you’re trying to find a job, you can post a notice on the discussion board and refer to your profile/resume so that your church family knows to be on the lookout for you and to pray for God’s providence.
  • If you aren’t looking for a job, the Sugarloaf CrossLink is a good way to connect with our brothers and sisters who are unemployed/under-employed and to support them with our prayers, our friendship and our professional contacts.
  • If you know of a job opening, the Sugarloaf CrossLink is a good place to post it (actually the Sugarloaf CrossLink Job Openings, a subgroup of the main Sugarloaf CrossLink group).

In addition, you can join LinkedIn and the Sugarloaf CrossLink groups for FREE!

Here’s how to join LinkedIn:

  1. Go to www..linkedin.com.  Enter your first name, your last name and your e-mail address and create a password.  Then, click on the “Join Now” button.
  2. At the next screen you must select your country (United States in the default) and enter your postal code.  In addition, you must at least select your industry from a list of about 150, and depending on the employment status you select, you may also be required to enter your company and your title.  Then, click on the “Enter LinkedIn” button.
  3. At the next screen (your home page on LinkedIn), you can begin joining groups, building your profile and adding applications.  In the meantime, LinkedIn will send a message with a link to confirm your e-mail address.  You must confirm your e-mail address before you can send connect with your contacts through LinkedIn.

If you’re looking for a job, there are always at least 100 professional jobs within 50 miles of SUMC posted on LinkedIn, some exclusively on LinkedIn.  Just click on the “Jobs” link at the top of the screen, enter “30097″ as the postal code and click on the “Search” button.  To cast a wider net, click on “The Web” tab to bring up 40,000+ jobs of all kinds within 50 miles of SUMC found through SimplyHired.  You can refine your search, and when you find something of interest, ask your professional connections (particularly those in the Sugarloaf CrossLink group) to help you gain the inside track.

Here’s how to join the Sugarloaf CrossLink group, once you’re a member of LinkedIn:

  1. Click on “Groups” in the panel on the left side of the screen.
  2. On the right side of the screen, click on the “Find a Group” button.
  3. Enter “sugarloaf crosslink” as the keywords and click on the “Search” button.
  4. Click on the second “Join this group” link to join BOTH the main group and the “Job Openings” subgroup.  Click on the first “Join this group” link to join ONLY the main group.
  5. Review the settings on the next screen and click on the “Join Group” or “Join Subgroup” buttons at the bottom of the next screen.

If you need help navigating LinkedIn, Sugarloaf CrossLink or the “Job Openings” subgroup, call me at 770-235-4276 or send me an e-mail at ken.powers@bellsouth.net.

If you know of others who might benefit or contribute in connecting with the SUMC family on LinkedIn, please invite them to join the Sugarloaf CrossLink group.

In the meantime, may God bless us, everyone!

BEYOND THE WALLS: Is the Outreach and Missions Ministry of the Church

Beyond the Walls will host our next Dinner at the Diner, February 18. Join us for Missions for Dummies as we have fun expelling the falsehoods and fears of serving on a mission team. There will have fun meeting our mission trip leaders, watching a video from past “fearful” mission team members and we will play games with the top prize being a mission scholarship for one of our mission trips. The dinner will be followed by individual informational meetings for our three summer trips to Nicaragua, Pueblo Pintado Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico and Safehouse Outreach in downtown Atlanta.

Find more information regarding each of our trips on the Beyond the Walls webpage at www.sugarloaf.org.

Speaking Boldly for Our Faith by Atlanta Christian CPA & Author

I love to tell the story of how I was raised at Rehoboth Baptist Church, attended Northpoint Community Church, was a member at Perimeter Church and now at Sugarloaf United Methodist Church. Though a varied background to be sure I have found that churches that teach God’s word are open to all people regardless of race, gender, or back-ground. I have often felt that J.C. “Jesus Christ” really stands for Just Christian. So whether you be Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian or Non-denominational thee important part is what we believe rather than the label we put on our worship. When as Believers are out in the world we need to be focusing on the Word of God that unites us rather than what divides us as we want people only to see the love of Christ in us.

When sharing our love for a fallen world we need to bind up the brokenhearted, walk alongside those who are suffering and witness to those who are lost. Teaching others to see God as a one of love, who offers grace to all who seek it should be the watchword by which we live our lives.

Serving as a keynote speaker for your congregation or Bible study group, We bring to your group a new revelations in how to see scripture as well as to unravel the mysteries of the Old Testament. By studying the stories of old, we begin to see that the God of the Ages is the same as the love of Christ in the New Testament. Bringing along the Story of Job in our book Overcoming Life’s 9/11′S and Nehemiah in our book A Voice of One we begin to see great lessons that we can all apply to our lives to bring radical change to the way we both live our lives and to church. Ordaining all who believe to serve as Lay Ministers to do great things for the Kingdom. Join us as we work to “Take Christianity Into the World.”
